“Goodness, Discipline, Knowledge, Where Everyone Cares” is the Motto of St. Pius X School. This week we celebrate once again Catholic Schools Week, our yearly celebration of the Mission of Catholic schools. All schools are about education: Teaching our children how to read and then to appreciate the wealth of literature; teaching our children basic arithmetic and then to understand the world through mathematics and science; teaching our children to write and then to communicate oneself and one’s culture; all these things are what children learn in school. In a Catholic school though, these subjects, as important as they are, are not the goal. Rather, they are the means of teaching what Jesus has taught us about who God is and who we really are as God’s children. The primary goal of Catholic schools is evangelization, proclaiming who Christ is for us, inviting our children into a relationship with Jesus and encouraging them to follow Our Lord each day of their lives. We learn about the world in order to learn about God. Education is more than “book learning”, it is also learning that, as Jesus taught us, we are each beloved children of God, and because of that, we respect each other and ourselves in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge, because we really do care.
